What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens and usually progresses slowly. If left untreated, cataracts may result in blindness. An annual eye exam with your eye care professional can help identify the cataract early and allow for treatment.

  • Sensitivity to sunlight or bright lights
  • Lack of brightness in colors
  • Increased nearsightedness
  • Seeing “halos” around lights

Risk Factors for Developing Cataracts

  • Aging
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High Blood Pressure

Protect Your Vision

Though there is no proven way to prevent cataracts. Healthy living, wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and not smoking will help you reduce your risk of developing cataracts.

In the early stage of cataracts, when your vision begins to change, you may be able to use handheld magnifiers, filter lenses to heighten contrast or improved lighting to help with everyday activities.
