5 Things I Wish I Did Earlier As Software Engineer
We are not in the business of programming because we like people :p. Many of us (including me) are very introverted and shy. We often spend most of our time in front of monitors ignoring the outside world even exists!
But guess what! Nobody cares how good you are before they know about it. And how will they ever know? You have to self-promote yourself. But don’t worry.
There are lots of ways of self promotion without being a jerk!
Today I will share 5 ways to improve visibility as a software engineer. These are things I have started doing personally and they work!
1. LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a great place to start for you. I have ignored this awesome platform for quite some time and now I regret that.
#Design your profile
LinkedIn is a place to find new opportunities. That can be a job or a great new deal. But to do that you have to increase your value to others. So take some time to design your profile. Include all your job experiences and try to demonstrate your skills with real-life examples.
#Connect with people
Try to connect with as many people as possible. I have almost 6000 followers on Facebook. At first, I thought why should I send connection requests to people I don’t know? But that’s exactly the point on LinkedIn.
You never know where the next opportunity come from

- Recruiters are always looking for skilled people. If you can show your skills tastefully they will reach you. You might never need to search for a job ever again!
- You can test your skills using LinkedIn tests which helps you to demonstrate your skills even further!
- LinkedIn Jobs is a great place to find your next job.
2. StackOverflow
We all use stack overflow to solve our daily problems. For a long time, I thought who answer those questions must be super smart! But as it turns out your limited knowledge might be helpful for some other person!
So don’t shy away to answer questions on StackOverflow. It has some awesome benefits too
- You get to see different coding practices
- You can get new ideas for doing the same thing you already do
- You get a chance to dig into other peoples thought process which will improve your debugging skill
- Potential recruiters might find it fascinating that you are able to answer your domain-related questions.
- This is a great chance to help others and showcase your skills at the same time!
Blogging
Blogging is tremendously helpful whether you are just starting out or a seasoned programmer.
Writing is natures way of exposing how sloppy your thinking process is -Guindon
Whenever you learn something new and you try to explain it to others you can find out the gaps in your knowledge. So try to document everything you learn. It has some other benefits too!
- You can earn money from blogging platforms like Medium.
- Your blogs can work as your personal documentation.
- You get other people to judge your work which is great!
- Others can know about your skills from your writing.
Github
Github is a great place where your profile can work for your benefit. Take some time to decorate it. Here is mine
Make it stand out from others. Demonstrate your skills and ways to connect. Somebody on your next job interview will surely visit your GitHub profile at-least once. Make it count!
Youtube
This is a place where I haven’t done it extensively. But explaining some complex topic in a video improves my understanding of the topic even more!
Also, there are other benefits too. If you are very good you can earn a lot of money from here!
I personally know some people who were invited to work for great companies based only on their youtube channel. This demonstrates your communication skills which are key in this world of remote jobs!
Sharing your work might open so many new opportunities! I myself experienced that in the last 6 months only. But that story is for another day.
