Google I/O 2021 Keynote (Part II) — What’s New, Android 12, and Project Starline

Hello again guys, I will continue with part II of the Keynote event. You can find the previous part below. I hope you enjoy part II.

Part I -> https://levelup.gitconnected.com/google-i-o-2021-keynote-whats-new-part-i-ea8449aa5827

Google Shopping

Google uses the data from users to make it more helpful. They are doing it for shopping too. According to Bill Ready, people are shopping across Google more than a billion times a day. Let’s check what Bill announced.

Shopping Graph

Shopping graph brings together information from websites, price reviews, videos, and most significantly the product data that they receive from brands and directly from retailers themselves.

Google can connect users with 24 billion listings to buy those items from millions of merchants across the web.

  • Shopping Scenario

According to Bill Ready, Google will combine the shopping experience with Lens, Search, Photos, Youtube, and Chrome. For instance, you see furniture at a restaurant and you wanted to buy it. You can search it with Lens and buy it.

Searching furniture with Google Lens

You found the furniture but you changed your mind and typed “patio furniture” to Search. You can find the information of stock, reviews, price of millions of different furniture at Google Images.

Sometimes people take screenshots of products but some time later they buried in the photos. After updates, you will be able to search that item with the help of Google Lens in photos.

Another update that is on the way is to Youtube. Users will able to browse products that they saw on Youtube videos.

Also, Chrome will get updates in case of shopping. When you open a new tab, you will see your open carts from the past couple of weeks. And there will be special discounts to users if they choose to buy.

Google Photos

Little Patterns

Google Photos has updates on the way and it aims to resurface your memories from photos. People take photos and sometimes these photos can be forgotten and Google has an update to change it.

  • Little Patterns
“This feature uses machine learning to translate photos into series of numbers and compares how visually or conceptually similar these images are. When we find a set of three or more photos with similarities such as shape or color, we’ll surface them as a pattern.” Shimrit Ben-Yair
  • Cinematic Photos

Design and Android

After the introduction of Material Design in 2014, it set new standards for Android apps. People are more intended to express their individuality and they are demanding the same thing from their technology. Google takes it as a challenge and they are aware of beauty is personal. They call the new design “Material You”. This design includes users as co-creator and letting you transform the apps by generating personal Material palettes. Also, this design can flex to every screen and fit every device. This new design allows you to change:

  1. Color Palette
  2. Contrast
  3. Size
  4. Line Width

ANDROID 12

And here we are Android 12! This topic concerns me too closely as an Android Developer. Let’s check it out.

Dynamic Color Palette and Lighting

Google will use a clustering algorithm with Material color targets to determine which colors are dominant, which ones are complementary, and which ones look great together. The system will create a custom palette based on the colors in the wallpaper photo. Then, it will apply hues across different parts of the interface.

In the case of lighting, starting from the lock screen, lighting will change where you touch or pick up your phone without touching, the screen will light up from the bottom of your screen.

Privacy&Security

“Since 2017, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy have continually received the highest security rating in Gartner’s annual Mobile OS comparison report. Simply put the most secure devices run on Android. And with Android 12 we are going even further to keep your information safe.” Suzanne Frey

In Android 12, Google is created a new Privacy Dashboard to give people more transparency and control.

Also, there will be indicators for the mic and camera if they are in use.

Health

Google AI is helping the health sector to recognize different types of cancers. AI is flagging the images for further evaluation.

  • Dermatology Assist Tool

You can reach that tool from a phone or computer. Uploading 3 different photos from various angles is enough to search skin, nail, or hair issues that you want to learn about.

Project Starline

As I understand from the presentation, Project Starline is a new 3D imaging technology that allows you to show yourself as the 3D model in calls, meetings with your own hologram-like 3D image. The technology is still in development and test. We will see what the future holds for us.

Thank you for reading and claps, everyone. I hope you enjoyed my articles. Thanks again and cyaa!??
