Being a software developer means you have to write code. There's much that goes into software development than fits the picture. Its more than just writing code, building clones, putting up websites or building utility apps that don't solve any problem, then stuffing them with ads.
Why build apps that don't solve any problem? Or won't ship?
Being a software developer means you have to solve real life problems, make things better, automate things that would take ages to complete. However, many of us are wasting countless hours building clones. When you think about it, these clones don't solve any problem. They won't beat the real apps, owned by the big companies, developed by hundreds of experienced developers. Well, building clones may help improve your skills, they help add something to your portfolio. However, getting a software development role anywhere means you have to present yourself as a problem solver, rather than a coder. Why not learn Data Structures and Algo's instead of building an Instagram clone? Why not develop an app that solves some of your daily issues? Why not build a face recognition module that you may integrate on your future project?
Don't just code. Build solutions to real life problems.
Its time we think ahead, its time we build solutions. Many of us have lost ideas. People from different career walks are coming up with the ideas, and we have to implement them. Many of us don't have any real life solutions. We're waiting for that one guy to come around with an awesome idea for us to build. Its okay to build other peoples apps. But, according to me, its not okay to build clones.
Fellas, don't just code. Build solutions!
