Recruiters get HUNDREDS of job applications everyday, but none of them stand out.

Having an excellent portfolio drastically improves your chances of landing your dream job, and here's how:

Rule 1. Make it fancy

Danny Garcia's Portfolio.

The visual appearance of your portfolio matters. And if web design is not your area of expertise, then you can look at other portfolios for inspiration.

Inspiration

Resources

  • Dribble: show-and-tell for designers.
  • Behance: showcase and discover creative work.
  • BrandColors: official colors for the world's biggest brands.
  • Google Fonts: directory of open source designer web fonts.
  • Flat Kcon: thousands of free icons.
  • Figma: a free online web design tool.
  • Pinterest: social media for art (includes web design).

Rule 2. Showcase your projects

Eli Fitch's Portfolio.

Increase your chances of landing a job offer by showing-off the work that you previously did.
A good project for your portfolio should have the following properties:

  • have good UI and UX.
  • solves a real problem.
  • shows that you have creativity.

But you're probably wondering: what should I make?
So I assembled a (growing) list of portfolio-approved projects:

  1. School Planner
  2. Mood Tracker and Diary
  3. Pomodoro Timer
  4. Flashcards Maker
  5. Movie Tracker
  6. Ecommerce Store
  7. Password Manager
  8. Notes App, with your own special touch!

Rule 3. Make it easy to contact you

From Danny Garcia's Portfolio: You can follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Here's my email.

Finally, you need to make it clear to your portfolio visitors how they can contact you.
This involves creating a Contact Page, where you curate a list of communication channels:

  • Email
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter

BONUS: Share it around!

Finally, you need to share your portfolio with other people:

  • Your friends
  • Your Twitter
  • Your blog (if you have one)

Good Luck!

And I wish you all the best luck on your web development journey!
