YouTube monetisation is not as easy as just uploading video and watching the money roll in. Let’s take a look the various ways you can start earning money from your YouTube videos.
What is YouTube Monetisation?
If you earn money through your videos on YouTube, then that’s YouTube monetisation! It’s not as easy as just uploading video and watching the money roll in, though. First, you might need to join the YouTube Partner Programme, depending on how you want to make money. Let’s take a look at how you can do that first, and then the various ways you can start earning money from your YouTube videos.
How to Join the YouTube Partner Programme
The YouTube Partner Programme has recently expanded to give creators in certain countries earlier access to some of their features, so it’s worth checking if that applies to you. Generally though there are some things you need to know, so let’s take a look.
Eligibility
To qualify for YPP you need to have 1,000+ subscribers with a “minimum of 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months” or have 1,000+ subscribers with “10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days” and watch hours in the Shorts Feed don’t count towards that total.
If your account meets the criteria, you’ll then be reviewed to see if you meet the guidelines that YouTube require.
Guidelines for Joining the YouTube Partner Programme Once Eligible
- Follow the policies
- Live in one of the countries listed
- Have two step verification turned on
- Have access to advanced features. You can check this by signing into YouTube Studio and going to Settings > Channel > Feature eligibility.
- Have, or add, one AdSense for YouTube account linked to your channel.
I’m Eligible, How do I Join?

In YouTube Studio, go to Earn and then select Apply Now. You’ll be guided from there! Once you’ve applied, you’ll be able to see updates when they’re there – this can take up to a month.
Some More Things You Need to Know
Once you’re approved that doesn’t mean you have access to all features, each one you turn on may be checked by reviewers to see if there are any barriers to you using it, like local legal issues, or if there’s no support in your language for example.
You need to stay active, YouTube says it may turn off monetisation for accounts who don’t upload or post for 6 months or longer.
YouTube Monetisation: Ways to Make Money on YouTube
1. Ad Revenue

Ad revenue, as you probably know, is money you make by allowing adverts to be played on your videos. This is earned by things like impressions, clicks, and other engagement. Ad types can include pre-rolls (before a video), mid-rolls (during) and overlay (transparent banners over the video).
2. Selling Products

You sell branded products or merch directly from your YouTube channel by showcasing and promoting either a physical thing, or a digital service/content. You can link to your online store and drive sales via your YouTube Account.
3. Sponsored Content

Collaborate with other brands that fit your channel’s audience and negotiate sponsorship deals to show off those products or services in your videos. It’s important to be transparent about sponsored content so that your audience don’t feel tricked
4. Affiliate Marketing

This is where you get a commission by promoting products and services that people buy from affiliate links. For this, you need to join affiliate programmes that match up with your audience and their interests and then put those links into your video descriptions or content.
5. Channel Memberships
Offer your viewers Channel Membership where they can subscribe for a monthly fee and get perks and benefits in return. These perks can be things like members-only videos, badges, exclusive streams, and so on. For this method to work you need to be actively engaging with your subscribers.
6. Super Chat and Super Stickers

This feature lets viewers donate money and have their messages highlighted by purchasing a ‘chat’ or a ‘sticker’ during your stream, which makes them more visible to creators as they get highlighted. That way, you can interact with supporters in real time! There’s now also Super Thanks, which used to be called Viewer Applause which is essentially the same as we’ve just described, but a specific animation.
7. Licensing Content
License your videos to other media platforms, companies, or broadcasters. For this money stream to work, you need to negotiate agreements that specify how someone can use your content, and for how long and be sure to protect your intellectual property rights. It goes without saying that you’d need to have something people actually want to license!
8. YouTube Premium
With YouTube Premium, you pay a subscription (so you also get access to videos with no adverts) but then creators receive a share of the revenue of Premium based on the watch time of other Premium members on their content.
How Much Money Can You Make on YouTube?
This is a tricky one to nail down because it really can vary so much based on things like engagement, ad rates, what type of method you’re trying, and so on. We can make some best guesses though! There are tools like this YouTube Monetisation Calculator where you can put in your data and it’ll work out a rough amount of money you might earn based on that. Here’s a quick run-through in the order we’ve just looked at monetisation options.
Ad Revenue
Based on a cost per view, this comes out at an average of $0.018 according to recent figures. That’s around $18 per 1,000 ad views, but again we’re stressing that this is an average and can vary a lot. If you’re wondering how much money you make from 1 million views on YouTube, it’s probably somewhere between $1,200 and $6,000.
Selling Products
If you’re selling products on YouTube then there’s no real way to know what you might make because it all depends on your costs and ultimately what your profit is once all those are taken off.
Sponsored Content
Whatever you can negotiate! This will rely heavily on your reach, and influencers with huge audiences can make thousands of dollars for each video or campaign.
Affiliate Marketing
Authority Hacker puts the commission percentages between 5% and 50% of the purchase or subscription price but realistically you’re probably looking at 30% or lower and this could earn you anything from a few dollars, to hundreds of dollars.
Channel Memberships
YouTube takes 30% of any revenue generated through paid subscriptions, so it depends on the tiers you set, less this percentage as to how much profit you could make.
Super Chat and Super Stickers
Another one that YouTube takes a 30% commission on, the Super features are great if you have a large audience clamouring for your attention, though they are limited to spending US$2,000 (or equivalent) per week.
Licensing Content
Another ‘how long is a piece of string’ one I’m afraid. It depends how desirable your content is. You don’t need to be selling a huge news event on video, many educators license out their videos for institutions to use, for small amounts like a couple of dollars per student, or a one time fee of a few hundred dollars for them to be used in classrooms.
YouTube Premium
We’ve sort of covered this already and it’s a complicated one because you have to factor in your own subscription cost to the service, which changes all the time. In a nutshell, if you qualify for monetisation, plus you’re subscribing anyway, then you might as well!
How do you Make Money From YouTube Videos? General Tips

We’ve covered the specific ways on how how you can make money from YouTube Videos but there’s advice that’s good generally too, no matter which ways you’re thinking of.
Be Consistent
Consistency is key sounds like such a cliché, but it’s really important. It’s not just about the content, it’s how often you upload it too. Try to have a schedule that you stick to.
Engage
Respond to comments and feedback from your viewers, plus encourage them to engage with you. You might want to think about hosting specific streams like a Q&A that will push for engagement in a way that a regular video might not.
Optimise Search
Always think about relevant keywords you can use, good thumbnails, and metadata inclusion. All of this will help improve the discoverability of your videos.
Use Analytics
Make use of analytics to see what you’re doing well and what you need to change. Use the stats to adjust your channel to fit what your audience are loving. Do this over a period of time, don’t react to what could be statistical anomalies, look for trends.
Diversify
Don’t just stick to one way of making money from YouTube videos, try to have several monetisation methods on the go at once and that way you won’t need to have all your eggs in one basket.
Adapt
Keep an eye on what other people are doing, on industry trends, and on changes in things like algorithms and best practices.
Conclusion
YouTube has a variety of ways that you can monetise your videos, but it’s never going to happen overnight. Like most success stories, you need to put time into planning your content and building an audience, and then you can start to monetise your videos. It can be a slow process, but there are plenty of people who manage to monetise YouTube, and there’s no reason you can’t too if you keep an eye on trends, and follow some of our tips!
