The web is a gift. The web is a weapon.

I’ve been dissatisfied with the direction of the web industry for a while.
I learned to code in the era of web craftsmanship. I’m a web artisan. I care deeply about the code I write, and how people interact with it.
But as it’s matured, the web has evolved into an industry. And that means that profit has largely been prioritized over people. It’s why frameworks dominate, despite providing a generally worse user experience.

It’s why crypto and NFTs and now AI get so much hype while providing so little value.

And recently, it’s contributed to the global rise in fascism.

I love the web. It let me find all of my fellow weird nerds when I was very much an outcast in my own local community.

I hate the web, because the Nazis and Fascists used it to find their people, too.

I used to be a techno-optimist. But under capitalism, all systems rot. Tech is no exception.

I still believe in the power of the web. I still love it. I think it can do lots of good. Wired magazine wrote a good op-ed about this yesterday that inspired today’s article.

But I also think the web is about to get a lot worse.

We, the people who build for the web, can help reduce some of that harm. The work you do matters. The choices you make matter.

Care about the craft. Build things that matter. Focus on the people who use what you build.
