The concept of form is essential in design. It's often confused with shape, but they're actually two different things. We'll explore what the form is and look at some real-life applications of this key design concept.
What is form in design?
Form as an element of design can be defined as the positive space in a composition. Picture a background with elements on top and the contrast between them. It can look like a dot, line, or shape that's resting over the space at the back.
While they're different concepts, form and shape are mutually dependent. So altering either of them will have an impact on the other.
What form looks like in graphic design
The definition is clear. However, what interests us is not the theory but the practical application of the concept of form.
Let's look at some designs that vividly exemplify the uses of form in design.
Here we have a very clever example of the positive-negative relationship.
The positive space consists of the hand and the bottom of the bulb.
The negative space is the background.
The thoughtful composition between the two concepts makes it seem as if there is a light bulb in the image.

Form can help you create engaging magazine covers, such as this one.
The positive space comprises the text and the photo.
This use of form offers room to breathe. It looks minimalistic and modern. Even if the image is quite big, it helps by having a light background itself—form-on-form spotted!
All the subtle dark elements, both in the photo and in the cover, give a nice balance to the entire design.
