Async communication vs. meetings at work

One thing I’ve noticed about myself is that I really prefer written or asynchronous communication.
I find it much easier to make friends online than IRL. I enjoy making deep connections with folks I talk to on the web, most of whom I’ve never met offline.
And a big part of that, for me, is that my brain often moves too fast for my mouth.
With in-person conversations, trying to track what other people are saying and thoughts I had in response to it is hard.

And a big part of that, for me, is that my brain often moves too fast for my mouth.

With in-person conversations, trying to track what other people are saying and thoughts I had in response to it is hard. It’s easy for me to interrupt folks (not on purpose!), or forget what someone just said, or forget what I wanted to say.

But in a Slack chat or email or on social media platform, I have a written record I can go back to. I can write down what I want to say, and read it to make sure it makes sense and that what I’m trying to say is actually what I said.

Now that I’m working at a “real job” again, I’ve noticed that a lot of neurotypical folks really like to “jump on a quick call” to have a chat. And for me, it’s so much faster and easier and better to take a few moments to type up my thoughts in Slack.
