I did a three part series on blogging but Jim just tagged me so… I guess the threequal becomes a quadrilogy?
Why did you start blogging in the first place?
I was new to the web scene, fresh out of college† and starting a new job in London. I’ll blame my boss Iain Scott who loved a bit of social media. It was an exciting time in my life!
† “Uni” over here. I’m not one for Americanisms but I did technically study my degree in an arts college.
What platform are you using to manage your blog and why did you choose it?
I built my own bespoke tooling (please don’t look, it’s terrible). I blog straight to markdown, push to GitHub, and deploy to Cloudflare. I used to pay for and maintain my own VPS but you can’t beat “free” services.
Have you blogged on other platforms before?
I’ve always hosted my own blog. I started on a framework called Habari that I think Simon Elvery, work colleague at the time, was using or recommended or possibly tweeted? In 2010 I moved to WordPress. In 2015 I moved to Metalsmith. That was the first of many static site generators including React 😬, later Svelte, and now my own abomination.
How do you write your posts? For example, in a local editing tool, or in a panel/dashboard that’s part of your blog?
Straight to markdown. Nothing fancy.
When do you feel most inspired to write?
Unfortunately, it’s often when something grinds my gears. I started a second notes blog so I can post spicier stuff without dedicating as much time. Otherwise, I’m inspired by building personal projects and learning new tech.
Do you publish immediately after writing, or do you let it simmer a bit as a draft?
Pretty much immediately. I’ll take a short break to rest my eyes before a final proof read. Then I’ll publish and only once it’s live do I catch the typos and grammatical blunders.
What are you generally interested in writing about?
Web stuff! And lately, Zig.
Who are you writing for?
I discuss that in part one; myself.
What’s your favorite post on your blog?
I enjoy my self-hosted updates even if no one else cares! I’m sure people like a good nosey even if they’re too polite to admit it.
Any future plans for your blog? Maybe a redesign, a move to another platform, or adding a new feature?
I’m always adding new features like static search and design tweaks. I even made a time machine to revisit all my own homepage designs. Every time the browser gods add new CSS features I’ll look for an opportunity to use it. I made a staging playground for that too.
