GitHub Ensloppification

The GitHub API says my account was created 2011-08-23 which is what, 14 years ago? Not bad for a free (gratis) ride. I never paid GitHub a penny but I did once rinse 99% of a quota. The GitHub API says my account was created 2011-08-23 which is what, 14 years ago? Not bad for a free (gratis) ride. I never paid GitHub a penny but I did once rinse 99% of a quota. In that time I’ve amassed 10k stars which I’m now looking to cash in… is there like, a gift shop, or something to exit through?

Leaving GitHub

Ok so I’m not deleting my account just yet (booo!) Discredit me if you must. I have work clients that rely on package provenance and other workflows. GitHub remains a necessary evil working in web dev, but GitHub today is not what I signed up for 14 years ago.

GitHub has pivoted to ensloppification.

“AI” is destroying the web I build. I don’t intend to participate in the scam. You can’t pay me to prompt. Publishing new code to GitHub means directly feeding slop factories a precious finite resource. They’ve stolen everything and they’re desperate for more.

Also, GitHub sucks now.

Whatever I was sacrificing before for the free service seemed like a fair deal. Now they’re literally trying to destroy my career; not a fair deal.

I can leave GitHub but I refuse to be bullied off the web!

meme from Futurama with Bender exclaiming: 'I'll build my own git forge, with blackjack and hookers!'

Enter Forgejo

Forgejo is a hard fork of Gitea. I’ve used both as private backup servers. I’m not familiar with the politics but Forgejo seems less likely to ensloppify, question mark?

I setup a second Forgejo instance for public code.

It’s here 👉 git.dbushell.com

Over the next few months I’ll migrate my projects off GitHub and into Forgejo. If I’m looking for collaboration on future projects I will push to Codeberg too. If you want off GitHub and don’t fancy DIY, Codeberg is the place to go.

By the way, I’m not stupid. I know my new repositories will be pillaged by “AI” bots. These clowns will break every law, they’ll ignore every moral and ethical boundary, they’ll bypass every technical barrier. At least they can’t say I consented.

Self-hosted

I’m self-hosting Forgejo in a containerised setup on a Raspberry Pi 5 — we’ll see how that performs. For now I’m using a Cloudflare Tunnel to expose it to the internet and block malicious “AI”. If you’re going to @ me about how evil Cloudflare is please suggest another option, I’m actually curious I haven’t had time to research. For paranoid security the Pi is firewalled from the LAN.

My Forgejo instance is one user only (me). That doesn’t allow for collaboration, but I’m rarely seeking that; I don’t have time for the maintenance burden. I just open source code because I think it’s a nice thing to do. I’ll kindly accept feedback and bug reports via email.

Licensing

I have to consider whether the MIT license I use for most code allows “AI” training. I’ve yet to see any “AI” slop attribute any license, so I don’t buy that argument. If you believe it’s fair game go ahead and buy your $200/month subscriptions.

I’ve never been sure of GPL licenses but I’m going to look into them. It’s tempting to write my own “NO-AI” license but will that hold water? Is the don’t be a dick public license battle-tested?
