The difference between successful and struggling teams often comes down to recognizing these underlying structures.

Game theory emerged from practical necessity, not academic curiosity. Born from World War II military planning and refined by Nobel Prize winners, it explains why smart people consistently make decisions that hurt everyone, including themselves. More importantly, it shows you how to recognize these situations and navigate them better.

The two most basic and important games you encounter daily are the Prisoner’s Dilemma and the Chicken Game. Understanding the difference between them — and when one transforms into the other — is fundamental strategic thinking.

The birth of strategic mathematics

Game theory emerged in 1928 when Hungarian mathematician John von Neumann looked at poker and realized that traditional mathematics couldn’t capture the bluffing, deception, and strategic thinking the game required.
