Active meditation

My ADHD brain is busy AF.
It’s not just the stereotypical lots-of-thoughts-and-focused-on-none-of-them things. It’s that not thinking is sooooooo boring.
I often hear folks talk about the benefits of medication at helping you feel calm and focused. But like… just sitting there, not thinking about anything all?
It’s hard to imagine many things more painful than that.
Even my relaxation time is spent making something or reading about something or watching something or listening to something.

My brain needs to be engaged. It hurts not to be.

Yesterday, as a byproduct of talking about Taoism and the Wu-Wei in my article on wild gardening, I was watching a video on Wu-Wei while gardening in my yard.

The guy in the video, talking about using your intuition more, mentioned something along the lines of (I’m paraphrasing)…

Thinking is a choice. You can choose not to engage that part of your brain.

My dude… no I cannot. 😂

But then he started talking about sports and activities you enjoy can help get you into this intuitive mindset, and something clicked for me.

One of the reason I love hiking and gardening and even coding so much is that when I’m engaging my hands—when I’m being active—my brain stills and stops being quite so busy.

I’ve never really considered that “meditation” before, but I’m starting to rethinking it as a kind of active meditation.
