This is good advice all the time, but if you live in the US, where the US government just shut down, even more so.
It’s highly likely that a lot of essential services (ones that provide food to low income folks and aid to people with disabilities) will start to dry up over the next few weeks.
Reach out to your community. Find out who’s struggling, who needs help. Do mutual aid.
Post on your local Buy Nothing Project group about what you can offer (buying groceries, diapers, or other essentials; rides; picking up medicine for people who can’t drive).
Join Food Not Bombs and start cooking or distributing meals.
Start a Little Free Pantry. Tell your neighbors about it. Reach out to local grocery stores and farms, and ask if you can take the stuff they’re about to throw out off their hands to stock the pantry.
Call your local library and see if they have any aid programs, and if you can help with them. Reach out to your local food bank and see what they need.
Reach out. Talk to people. Know your neighbors.
