Kokoroko’s Tiny Desk debut was a triumphant showcase of the London-based afrobeat/jazz/funk collective’s soaring energy and newfound confidence. Despite some jitters from bandleader Onome Edgeworth, they delivered a spirited mix of originals from Tuff Times Never Last—especially on “Together We Are” and “Idea 5 (Call My Name)”—and won over NPR’s intimate crowd with tight horns, percussive grooves, and vibrant harmonies.
Their four-song set (“Never Lost,” “Together We Are,” “Idea 5 (Call My Name),” “Sweetie”) highlighted each member’s talents, from Sheila Maurice-Grey’s trumpet and vocals to Joel “JC” Clarke’s drums, all expertly captured by Bobby Carter and the Tiny Desk team. Tuff Times Never Last’s message—choosing joy in tough times—couldn’t feel more timely or uplifting.
