Apple Health tracks everything - VO2 max, heart rate zones, workout intensity. But what does it all mean?
I found out my VO2 max was below average. Started interval training. Saw improvements. But then had deeper questions: Is my form good? Are my sleep habits affecting recovery? How do my workouts compare week-over-week?
The metrics exist, but there's no way to actually talk to them and get insights.
The 24 - Hour Hackathon Solution
We eliminated two major friction points that plagued our original Apple Health MCP Server:
- Complicated setup - friends constantly needed help with installation
- Manual data exports - 10 minutes of XML export hell every time you wanted fresh data
Heads up: Apple Health MCP is still an actively maintained solution that can give you fun and interesting insights based on your data. Check out the repo or even dive deeper into the architecture by reading this article.
Our new architecture:
- HealthKit integration → continuous data sync (no more manual exports!) - for the sake of speed, we just used an already existing app, but we're gonna create our own Open Source app that will be available for free for everyone!
- FastAPI backend → processes workout data in real-time
- MCP Server → exposes data to LLMs like Claude for natural language queries
- n8n automation → weekly AI coaching summaries straight to your inbox
Talk to Your Health Data
Now, every metric becomes a conversation starter. Ask your data about recovery, progress, or performance trends—and get clear, AI-powered feedback. It’s a practical demonstration of how structured data, open standards, and language models can work together for genuinely useful fitness insights.
What’s Next
Be realistic - we didn't build a complete platform for storing, processing and exposing wearable data in the smartest way - but we built a working MVP that proves the idea and gives huge hope for the future, more mature solution.
We're continuing to expand this as an open-source platform with support for more wearables, privacy-first local AI models, and custom reports for trainers. If you're into healthtech, AI pipelines, or simply love getting personal insights based on your data, you'll probably enjoy exploring what we built.
