Our monthly Employee Spotlight series gives you a glimpse behind the scenes and brings you closer to the people behind the products at Vispero. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Justin Fegel, Technical Writer, User Education and Outreach at Vispero.

We chatted with Justin to find out how he got started in the accessibility field, why he thinks everyone should know about JAWS for Kiosk, and why you should never be afraid to ask questions.
Q&A with Justin Fegel
How long have you been with Vispero?
Justin: 26 years
What was your title/role when you started and what is it now?
J: I started out as a technical support specialist. Following that, I’ve spent some time in our testing department, a few years on our marketing team, which all lead to where I ultimately am, as a technical writer on our training and documentation team.
How did you first become interested in assistive technology or accessibility?
J: I have been a user of various assistive technology, primarily Braille and speech products, practically my whole life. Specifically, I have been a JAWS user since 1999.
What drew you to Vispero, and how has your journey with the company evolved over time?
J: Shortly after college, a mutual connection helped me set up an interview with Blazie Engineering who were looking for technical support agents in their Maryland office. I’m happy to say I did get the job and shortly after, the merger which created Freedom Scientific occurred. This of course eventually led to Vispero and the rest, as they say, is history.
What’s one project or product you’ve worked on at Vispero that you’re especially proud of?
J: JAWS for Kiosk. I was privileged to help create the administrator documentation for the Android version and it was a wonderful learning experience – both learning more about Android and the kiosk environment in general. The ability for blind users to be able to walk up to a self-service kiosk and independently use it is a major leap forward in accessibility.
How would you describe the team culture within your department or across Vispero as a whole?
J: Extremely open and collaborative. Everyone on my team and other teams are always willing to answer questions and pitch in where needed to complete projects and provide amazing products and support for our customers.
What’s one skill or perspective you’ve gained from working in the accessibility space?
J: The importance of making sure documents and web pages are fully accessible.
What are you most passionate about outside of work?
J: Playing guitar, singing, reading a good book, spending time with family and friends, and researching and investigating the paranormal.
What are you currently learning about (either professionally or personally)?
J: Creative writing. I took a few classes many years ago thinking it might be a career, but other opportunities put this on hold. I’m hoping to perhaps make a fresh start with it.
What’s an assistive technology product you think more people should know about?
J: JAWS for Kiosk. With more self-service options being rolled out, it’s more important than ever that companies be aware of this solution and how it can make their kiosk environment more accessible and inclusive for customers.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone new to the accessibility or assistive tech field?
J: The accessibility field is constantly in motion as technology continues to evolve, so be prepared to always be willing to learn something new. Also, never be afraid to ask questions no matter how basic they may seem.
You have a time machine! Would you travel to the past or the future, and why?
J: I would travel back in time as far as possible and then begin moving slowly forward so I could observe the creation of our solar system and planet firsthand.
