As part of the Opera One R3 update, we’re upgrading the browser’s AI. Rebuilt from scratch, the new Opera One AI is based on the Neon Chat Agent from our new agentic browser Opera Neon. It’s faster, smarter and helps you browse the web better. All for free.

What does this change mean for you?

With the introduction of the new Opera One AI, you’re getting access to our newest browser AI that is rebuilt for speed with a new architecture and improved engine. The new Opera One browser AI is replacing our first generation free browser AI named Aria, and is made to support your online browsing better with faster responses based on the content you see on the pages.

The new browser AI in Opera One has a much better integration with your tabs and browsing context than what was provided by Aria. The feature does not require any installation of a third party extension,  is hardened with the security and privacy enhancements from Opera Neon and you can start using it without creating an account. Once activated, it has automatic access to the context of the web page you are working with.

Analyze the current tab, or everything inside the Tab Island

What if you have a Tab Island with many tabs open about research on the latest developments in quantum computing? Well, you can use Opera One AI to get the context and a compilation of the information presented in all the tabs within said Tab Island – this means the new Opera One AI can use all those tabs and combine their content to let you create something out of it.

Another example of how Opera One AI can utilize the context from your tabs to provide you with solutions is when, for instance, you’re looking for a restaurant. In this case, you would naturally open several tabs with different options to take your friend out for dinner – and additionally, you could have your calendar open as well, all in a single Tab Island. With Opera One you can now ask AI to “Analyze my calendar for next week and then recommend the best time to book dinner for me and my friends.” The result would be something like this:

Finally, we’re moving the interface from the chat with the Opera One AI to the right of the screen to be in line with what we’ve established in Opera Neon – creating a pattern in which the AI interface is displayed at the right of the screen. This also means that we’re moving the access point to the Opera One AI to the new “Ask AI” button located in the upper right-hand side of the browser.

How does this relate to Aria and Opera Neon?

When we launched Aria in our browsers in May 2023, it was the very first free, integrated browser AI. From day one, it provided then unique features such as live web search, and has since evolved to a powerful and popular free AI service. However, with Opera Neon – our first agentic browser – we decided to rethink the way the browser AI should work, both from a conceptual and architectural point of view. By aligning the user interface between our browsers and shaping the AI integration in Opera One after the one in Opera Neon, we can bring you a significantly better experience moving forward.

While we’re introducing a more powerful and faster browser AI, we’re also sunsetting some elements of Aria that would otherwise become redundant. This means that the Command Line is being phased out since the access to the Opera One AI will now always be at hand, and additionally it’s now always context-aware (something that you previously needed the Command Line interface to activate).

The sidebar access on the left side of the browser to Aria is also being removed, since it was replaced by the more accessible “Ask AI” button in the upper right corner, by the toolbar. And, finally, the compose mode is also being phased out from the AI’s settings.

We’re looking forward to your feedback about browsing with the new browser AI in Opera One,
