Last week, I wrapped up a project I got to work on with the amazing team at Cloud Four, converting a very old app to modern HTML, CSS, and Web Components.
I don’t normally get sentimental about work, but I’m so sad that this engagement has come to an end.
The folks at Cloud Four are the best team I’ve ever worked with, and this has been one of the highlights of my career!
I first saw cofounder Jason Grigsby talk about the challenges of building for the web on TVs at An Event Apart Boston back when I was still an aspiring developer doing HR work.
I’ve admired creative director Tyler Sticka’s design work, and my personal conversations with him on Twitter, and now Mastodon, for years. I had dug into senior developer Gerardo Rodriguez’s excellent tutorials on the Cloud Four website several times over the years.
Working with people I admire so much professionally is always risky. Don’t meet your heroes and all that. This is the exception that proves the rule!
Gerardo leveled me up as a developer. His commitment to and inclusive web and focus on strong documentation made this project so much easier to dive into. Tyler’s approach to design was thoughtful and kind and conversational and data-backed.
And I made some amazing new web friends, too!
Cofounder Aileen Jeffries was an extraordinarily kind human and exceptionally good design who can also code. A true unicorn!
And VP/partner Megan Notarte is one of my favorite humans ever! She did such an amazing job keeping the project on track, helping prioritize and nudge us in the right direction without ever leaving me feeling burnt out or compromised.
The whole team is committed to doing the right thing, doing right by the client, and doing good work.
In my experience as a consultant, that’s exceedingly rare in an industry that pushes for more, faster, and cheaper, it was a breath of fresh air to work with such and incredibly talented and ethical team.
I already miss chatting with the team, and can’t wait to work with them again in the future.
And if you’re looking for a team to help you with a complex web challenge, reach out to Cloud Four. They are exceptionally good!
I’ll probably have more thoughts on specific stuff I learned from working with them to share, but today, I just wanted to gush about my friends!
