Goo Goo Dolls have been rocking for nearly 40 years, serving up sing-along anthems that still hit big whether you’re blasting them from your car speakers or belting them in a karaoke bar. At NPR’s Tiny Desk they kicked things off with “Slide” from their 1998 breakthrough album, slipped in the lesser-known 2006 gem “Feel the Silence,” and slowed it down with the meditative ballad “Not Goodbye (Close My Eyes).”
Of course, they closed with their forever-banger “Iris,” a song that’s swung between ironic throwback and bona fide tearjerker but still stops you in your tracks. John Rzeznik’s soulful rasp and the band’s tight backing give that stadium-rock warmth to our favorite cluttered desk.
