Image Quality: AVIF vs WebP vs JPEG/PNG

Let’s talk image quality — how good your images look and how much you can shrink them without losing detail.

🔥 AVIF Quality

Pros Cons
Better compression: Up to 50% smaller than WebP at the same quality! ⚠️ Encoding speed can be slower (when you create the image, not when loading).
High dynamic range (HDR) support ⚠️ Safari still has partial support, so test!
✅ Excellent for gradients, details, transparency, and sharp edges (less banding or artifacts)
Transparency (alpha) and animation supported

➡️ Image quality in AVIF is usually superior to WebP, especially for complex images (gradients, shadows, details).

WebP Quality

Pros Cons
Much smaller than JPEG/PNG, with good quality Not as good as AVIF at the same file size
✅ Transparency + animation support ❌ More visible artifacts at lower sizes compared to AVIF
Widely supported in all major browsers (even older Safari)

➡️ WebP is a great middle ground: smaller than JPEG/PNG, almost universal support, good quality, but not AVIF-level quality.

📷 JPEG/PNG Quality

JPEG PNG
✅ Decent photo quality (lossy) ✅ Perfect quality (lossless)
❌ Large file sizes ❌ HUGE file sizes
❌ No transparency (without tricks) ✅ Transparency support
❌ No animation ❌ No animation

Visual Example of Quality Difference

  • AVIF ➡️ Smaller + better detail + less banding
  • WebP ➡️ Slightly bigger + good quality, but compression may show in fine gradients
  • JPEG/PNG ➡️ Larger files + lower compression efficiency

Quick Summary

Format Quality (Best to Worst) Compression Transparency Animation Best For
AVIF 🔥 Best quality + smallest size 🚀 Up to 50% better than WebP ✅ Yes ✅ Yes Modern web images
WebP ✅ Very good, not as good as AVIF ⚡ Smaller than JPEG, bigger than AVIF ✅ Yes ✅ Yes Compatibility
JPEG ❌ OK but large ❌ Outdated ❌ No ❌ No Photos (older sites)
PNG ✅ Perfect (lossless), huge files ❌ Very large ✅ Yes ❌ No Logos, icons (older sites)

When Quality Matters

  • Use AVIF if you want high quality + small size
  • Use WebP for fallback (broad support + still small files)
  • Never use JPEG/PNG unless you need max compatibility (old devices, email clients, etc.)
