Hey all,
Today we have another update for Opera Air, our browser built around the concept of mindfulness: we’ve redesigned the Boosts feature to be smoother, more intuitive, and easier to use.
One of the browser’s built-in mindfulness features, Boosts has been a crowd favorite since we launched Opera Air. Pairing lo-fi audio tracks and ambient sounds with binaural beats, Boosts help you achieve mental states like Energized Focus and Deep Relaxation by playing two slightly different frequencies in each ear – this creates a perceived third frequency in the brain that can stimulate brainwave activity and promote relaxation, focus, and calm. You can find Boosts – as well as Opera’s Air’s second mindfulness feature, Take a Break – right from your browser’s sidebar.
New Boosts design aesthetics
Opera Air forefronts a clean, minimalist user interface, and so the first thing we’ve done with Boosts is improve accessibility and reduce clutter.
We already have 20 Boosts and we plan to add more in the future, so we wanted to make sure that they are easily discoverable and logically organized. To do so, we’ve introduced categories to make clearer which binaural beats correspond to different brainwaves, and thus to the desired mental state:
- Imagination: Theta waves (4-7 Hz), which promote deep relaxation, meditation, and access to the subconscious mind
- Balance: Alpha (8-13 Hz) waves, which encourage calm focus and a relaxed, alert mental state
- Productivity: Beta waves (14- 20 Hz), which enhance concentration, problem-solving, and active thinking
- Awareness: Gamma waves (21-40 Hz), which support high-level cognition and memory
In addition to neatly categorizing our Boosts, we’re also removing the Favorites feature. We noticed that most Boosts are accessed from Top Boosts or Recently Played, and so we didn’t want anything unused or extraneous busying up the UI.
Intuitive Boosts controls
In addition to making it easier to interact with the Boosts menu and choose the one that’s right for you, we’ve made it simpler to understand each part of a Boost, as well as to play them.
The Boost card now contains all of the Boost’s information, including its settings – that is, the music track, ambient sounds, and binaural beat frequency – and the Boost’s duration. When you start one, we’ve anchored the player at the bottom of your browser’s screen for increased accessibility. From there you can also control the settings of a Boost in just one click, for example adjusting the volume of the ambient sounds or changing the frequency of the binaural beat. That way, rather than digging through the feature menu to change the music track, you can easily do it right from the Boost card.
So now, the Boosts feature is even easier to use and simpler to enjoy: no hesitation about what you’re looking for, no clicking around to change things – it’s all right there with a simplified interface and at-your-fingertips controls.
If you’re already a fan of Opera Air – enjoy! But if not, find out how the browser built around mindfulness can benefit you – download Opera Air here.
