We often talk about how powerful our GPUs are — how many teraflops, how many frames per second. But have you ever wondered what else they could do besides mining crypto or running LLMs?
A few weeks ago, I decided to explore a different path — using that same computing power for something that might actually help science. This led me to Folding@Home, a distributed research project that turns idle PCs into part of one of the world’s largest supercomputers.
Here’s what I learned about ethical computing, personal responsibility, and the surprising impact of donating a few spare GPU cycles.
