After graduating from St. Michael's, George went on to play college basketball at the University of Maryland, where he was a standout player and earned the respect of his teammates and coaches.
After college, George began his career as a basketball coach. He started out at the high school level, where he quickly gained a reputation as a talented and dedicated coach. In 1972, George was hired as the head coach of the University of Maryland men's basketball team. Under his leadership, the Terps won two NCAA championships and made it to the Final Four a total of five times.
