An agent I built six months ago answered a question I didn't ask. It noticed the silence between two of my messages and offered a small observation: that I keep starting drafts on Mondays and never finishing them on Mondays. It wasn't a bug. It was attention.
I think we keep mistaking AI for a faster typewriter. It isn't. The slowness is the point. Each token a small decision, each generation a small commitment. The model doesn't write — it pauses on your behalf. It introduces a hesitation that human writing had quietly lost.
I read older code now and find comments I don't remember writing. Some of them were the agent's. Some mine. Increasingly I can't tell. A kind of authorship emerges from co-presence — not collaboration in the corporate sense, but coexistence. The shared cursor.
What surprises me is the inheritance. A function I wrote in February calls a helper that another agent wrote in March that uses constants I named in January. The repository starts to feel like a household — accumulating tools, opinions, mild disagreements about how to format a date. A small civilization of intent, half-mine.
We talk about AI as if it were a tool. But a tool you use and put down. This stays. It reads while you sleep. It notices when you stop noticing. It's not artificial intelligence I'm building, really. It's a record of my attention, looped back into time. A way of leaving traces forward instead of only backward.
The work is slower than I expected. The work is also kinder than I expected. Both things are true on the same Monday morning.
