Compete for Over $51K in the Decentralize AI Hackathon by HackerNoon, Nosana, Arweave, and MEXC

HackerNoon, Nosana, Arweave, and MEXC have launched the Decentralize AI Hackathon, a two-round competition focused on decentralized AI infrastructure. Participants can compete for more than $51,750 in compute credits, storage credits, cash rewards, and ownership of the DecentralizeAI.tech platform. The hackathon welcomes projects spanning decentralized compute, AI agents, open inference, permanent storage, verifiable AI, data sovereignty, and related infrastructure challenges.

AI is here to stay. There’s no debating that.

The only problem is that power has once again concentrated itself in the hands of a few dominant players: centralized systems that ingest your data voraciously, train models behind closed doors, and generate billions in value from ecosystems you neither control nor meaningfully benefit from.

The only AI future that benefits everyone equitably (and not just another generation of Big Tech monopolies) is one where builders can own their infrastructure, users can control their data, and intelligence is truly transparent.

But, this future will never come unless we build it.

And that’s why, alongside Arweave, Nosana, and MEXC, we’re pleased to launch the Decentralize AI Hackathon: a global competition for developers and early-stage startups building the future of open AI infrastructure.

Participants will compete for over $51,750 in compute credits, storage credits, and cash rewards across two rounds. And in an unprecedented move, HackerNoon will transfer full ownership of the DecentralizeAI.tech domain and codebase to the hackathon’s grand prize winner.

:::info Important Notes:

  • The Decentralize AI Hackathon will run for two rounds as follows:
  • Round 1: June 2 — October 31, 2026
  • Round 2: November 2026 — February 2027
  • Half the $51,750+ prize pool will be awarded to winners in each round.
  • Individual developers and early-stage startups are both welcome to participate, whether they’re building entirely new systems or extending existing projects.

:::

What We Want to See from Participants

Strong submissions should tackle AT LEAST ONE layer of what’s currently missing from open AI infrastructure, including:

  • Decentralized GPU orchestration — scheduling and managing compute across distributed nodes
  • Autonomous AI agents — building AI agents that can run continuously on decentralized GPU infrastructure
  • AI deployment tooling — simplifying how developers deploy, monitor, and scale AI workloads in production
  • Agent infrastructure and coordination — systems that help AI agents communicate, execute tasks, and operate reliably across distributed environments
  • AI runtime infrastructure — tools and frameworks for keeping AI applications and agents running persistently at scale
  • AI developer tooling — templates, workflows, SDKs, dashboards, or integrations that improve the developer experience for decentralized AI deployment
  • Scalable inference systems — infrastructure optimized for fast, reliable, and cost-efficient AI inference workloads
  • AI workflow automation — systems that automate AI task execution, orchestration, or model pipelines across decentralized compute
  • Permanent model storage — storing datasets, model weights, or inference logs using decentralized storage infrastructure like Arweave
  • Verifiable AI systems — transparency, provenance, and reproducibility in training or deployment
  • Open inference infrastructure — decentralized or censorship-resistant AI serving
  • Data sovereignty tooling — giving users and builders greater ownership over their own datasets

:::tip P.S.: You do not need a finished product to participate. Strong concept-stage submissions with clear technical direction, practical infrastructure ideas, and a compelling vision are also welcome. Projects will be judged based on technical depth, originality, and, only where relevant, proof that they work.

Hackathon Themes and Tags

Killing The GPU Bottleneck sponsored by Nosana

Nosana provides the decentralized GPU cloud for high-performance AI workloads. Developers get fast, affordable compute to train models, run inference, and scale without the bottlenecks of centralized cloud providers.

This category is for projects building decentralized compute networks, distributed GPU orchestration systems, open inference infrastructure, and scalable alternatives to centralized AI cloud providers.

Nosana-sponsored decentralize-ai hackathon tags:

You can choose any of these tags/keywords to enter and qualify for the Decententralize AI Hackathon.

Nosana is distributing $35,000 in compute credits to the first 500 qualifying participants ($70 worth of credits for each participant) and $6750 to 15 winners ($450 worth of credits for each winner). Approved participants will receive access to decentralized GPU compute infrastructure for AI training, inference, experimentation, and scalable workloads.

Participants can either:

Publish a blog/idea first and then claim credits, OR

Claim compute credits first and document their build progress through blogs afterward.

:::info Note: We’ve kept the process flexible to encourage participation even at the idea stage. All participants will be encouraged to use Nosana infrastructure throughout the hackathon journey to qualify for Nosana-sponsored prizes and rewards.

Important Notice: Don’t Let Your Nosana Credits Run Out

Deployments on Nosana are by default set to using an "Infinite Strategy", with a default "Container Timeout" of 6 hours and a "Replica Count" of 1.

This mean that one instance will be created for you, and will continue running until your credits run out. Depending on the GPU market you have chosen, your credits will run out quickly.

For instance, with an NVIDIA 5090, at $0.48/h, this will cost $350/month.

| Usage | Hours/month | Cost | |----|----|----| | 24/7 | ~730 | ~$350 | | 12 h/day | ~365 | ~$175 | | 8 h/day | ~243 | ~$117 | | 1 h/day | ~30 | ~$14.40 |

With only $70 worth of compute credits, you'll need to use it efficiently for the hackathon.

To do so, when creating your deployments, on https://deploy.nosana.com/deployments/create:

  1. Click the "configure" button
  2. Go to the "Deployment Configuration" tab
  3. Select "Simple" from the "Deployment Strategy" drop down list
  4. Keep the "Replica Count" at 1
  5. Choose your desired "Container Timeout"
  6. Click "Save Changes"
  7. Last but not least choose a GPU market that fits your needs

:::tip Because billing is based on actual uptime, you only pay for the hours your instance is running. To avoid burning through credits, stop instances when they're idle or lower the Container Timeout. This should help you stretch those $70 as long as possible! Claim credits here.
