My name is Rodney, and this is the story of how one ordinary conversation ended up changing the course of my life.
If someone had told me a few years ago that a conversation between two university students would eventually lead to an AI project, I probably would have laughed. Looking back now, it all feels surprisingly ordinary.
I grew up in Germany, where I developed an early fascination with technology. While many of my friends spent their free time playing video games, I was usually sitting behind a computer trying to understand how websites worked, experimenting with software, or reading about the latest innovations. I loved the idea that a simple piece of code could solve real problems, and long before I knew what I wanted to do professionally, I already knew one thing: I wanted to build something. By the time I started university, that ambition had only become stronger.
Like most students, my days followed a familiar routine. Every morning, my alarm rang around eight o'clock. I'd quickly get ready, jump on my bike, and ride across town to university. Most afternoons, classes ended around two o'clock. I'd head home, take a shower, eat something, and then leave again almost immediately. That was when the second half of my day really began.
There was a local youth center where students gathered after classes. For most people, it was simply a place to relax, play table football, watch football, or spend time with friends. For us, however, it became much more than that. It was a place where ideas were exchanged, projects were imagined, and conversations about technology often stretched late into the evening. That was where I met Nico Khaghani.
At first, we were simply two students who happened to share the same interests. We talked about artificial intelligence, programming, startups, software, and everything we believed technology could become. Before long, those conversations became part of our daily routine. As the months passed, we naturally spent more and more time together. Sometimes we stayed at the youth center, but more often we met at each other's homes.
Our friendship wasn't built only around technology. Whenever we had free time, we played football. When our student budgets allowed it, we went out for dinner. We talked about university, girls, our ambitions, our future, and everything else two students usually talk about. Yet somehow, every conversation eventually found its way back to technology.
Around that time, artificial intelligence became impossible to ignore. Like everyone else, we started using ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and many other AI tools that seemed to appear every week. Every platform impressed us in different ways. Some were exceptional at writing, others at research, reasoning, coding, or generating images. The problem wasn't that these tools weren't good enough. The problem was that we needed all of them.
Every project meant jumping from one platform to another, copying context between applications, rewriting the same prompts, and constantly deciding which model would be best suited for the next task. Ironically, the more capable AI became, the more fragmented our workflow felt. Instead of spending our time creating, we spent it managing tools.
One evening, during one of our countless discussions, a simple question came up:
Why had artificial intelligence become so powerful, yet so fragmented?
That question stayed with us. At first, it was nothing more than an idea. We filled notebooks with sketches, covered whiteboards with diagrams, debated different approaches, and challenged each other's assumptions. We weren't trying to build a company. We weren't thinking about investors, fundraising, or launching a product. We simply wanted to solve a problem we were facing ourselves every single day.
As we continued exploring the idea, something became increasingly obvious. The real challenge wasn't building another AI model. Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and many others were already pushing the boundaries of what foundation models could do, and they were doing it remarkably well. Our question was different. If these models were becoming more capable every month, why was it still so difficult to complete a task from beginning to end without constantly switching between tools?
We realized the problem wasn't intelligence anymore. It was coordination. What if users didn't have to think about which model to use? What if they could simply describe what they wanted to accomplish, and a system could automatically break that objective into multiple steps, select the right models and tools for each stage, coordinate them behind the scenes, and return a complete result?
That idea became the foundation of Nexus AI. Rather than competing with existing AI models, we wanted to build an orchestration layer capable of making them work together. A platform that could understand intent, coordinate reasoning, research, generation, and execution while hiding all the complexity from the user. Instead of forcing people to learn dozens of AI products, compare models, or manually build workflows, we wanted them to focus on a single thing: their objective.
Of course, having the idea was probably the easiest part. Building it was something entirely different.
For nearly a year, our lives settled into a completely different rhythm. University occupied our mornings while development consumed almost everything else. Evenings became coding sessions. Weekends disappeared. Late nights became normal. Features we believed were finished were rewritten from scratch. Entire prototypes were abandoned. We questioned our architecture more times than I can count, challenged almost every important decision, and learned that deleting weeks of work is sometimes the fastest way to move forward.
At the same time, artificial intelligence itself was evolving at an incredible pace. Every few weeks, a new model, a new API, or a major breakthrough changed the landscape. Instead of seeing that as a problem, it reinforced our conviction. If AI continued evolving this quickly, users wouldn't want to spend their time keeping up with every new model. They would need a system capable of adapting alongside the ecosystem.
Throughout that year, we continued using ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and many other AI tools every single day. We never wanted to replace them. In fact, using them constantly helped us better understand their strengths, their limitations, and the friction users experienced when trying to combine them. Almost every important design decision we made for Nexus AI came directly from those daily observations.
Looking back, the biggest lesson I learned had very little to do with artificial intelligence. It taught me that great ideas are everywhere, but consistent execution is incredibly rare. It taught me that progress is almost never linear. Most importantly, it taught me that building something meaningful isn't about having one brilliant idea. It's about showing up every day, even when nothing seems to work, trusting that each small improvement brings you one step closer to something bigger.
Today, when I think about Nexus AI, I don't immediately think about the product. I think about riding my bike to university every morning. I think about those evenings spent in front of a whiteboard. I think about the youth center where two students spent countless hours trying to imagine a simpler way to interact with artificial intelligence. Most of all, I think about the friendship that made all of it possible.
Over the years, Nico became much more than someone I built a project with. He became one of my closest friends. Looking back, I'm proud of what we've built together. But I'm even more grateful for everything the journey taught me. The projects that truly matter rarely begin with a perfect business plan. More often than not, they begin with curiosity, persistence, and one ordinary conversation that quietly changes everything.
